Lures can provide a winter warmer

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Dec 10, 2009

Byline: DAVID CARRICK

THE region’s stillwater trout fisheries have all moved into winter mode, with lures fished deeply and slowly taking many trout.

The drifted Bloodworm and Buzzers have also done well when trout were off the lures. Anglers have been catching a metre or so down and often very close into the windward bank.

Olive is a fine colour at present with Zonkers, and Fritz lures effective.

The trout fisheries are well stocked and in good form, with anglers catching well to lures in the mornings and, according to some reports received, nymphs and dries later in the day, especially when winds abate.

The drifted Bloodworm and Buzzer is a deadly method at this time of the year. Using the breeze to your advantage to drift the flies in a natural way to outwit the trout is a very effective tactic to use. Allowing the flies to move in the same path as the natural food that is on the drift seems to be a sensible approach to make.

Some excellent rainbows have come to the net this week. Jubilee produced superb fish to over 15lb 8oz, while Caistron saw a cracking 16lb 8oz rainbow come to the net. South Causey Fishery had rainbows to 13lb 8oz, while Sharpley produced rainbows to 15lb 8oz

Christmas card joke has mother seeing red

Byline: Sean Kane

PUTTING up with the occasional ginger joke is one thing – but it hurts all the more when it comes from Santa Claus.

A red-headed mother-of-three was incensed when she saw a card featuring Santa making fun of children with titian locks.

The card, on sale at Tesco, pictured a child on Father Christmas’s knee with the words: ‘Santa loves all kids. Even GINGER ones.’ Davinia Phillips, whose daughters all have red hair, claimed the card encouraged ‘discrimination’ and complained to a member of staff at the York branch who removed it from the shelf. She has now called for the supermarket to stop selling the card in all its stores.

Mrs Phillips said: ‘I have shown it to friends and they are disgusted. I don’t find it funny at all. My three girls are beautiful. I have never seen anything in my life promoting making fun out of people with ginger hair.

‘I don’t want people to think I’m a full-time mum with nothing better to do but this really touched a nerve. I’m sticking up for my kids.’ Mrs Phillips added that her daughters have already been teased at school over their hair colour.

She said: ‘They came home upset saying they were called “ginger ninjas”. I said there was nothing wrong with being a ninja – or ginger.’ She added: ‘If it had been about a black child or an overweight child the store would have been shut down by now. I am disappointed Tesco would sell something like that.’ A spokesman for Tesco said: ‘We sell a large range of Christmas cards including some which are intended to be humorous

Treasury calls for control of RBS bonuses

Treasury calls for control of RBS bonuses

0 Comments | Yorkshire Post (Leeds, England), Dec 2, 2009

As part of the terms of its deal to insure bad debts, the Government wants to dictate both the “quantum and shape” of the payouts at the bank for 2009.

It is understood that institutional investors have raised concerns about RBS’s ability to operate competitively after the move, which would give the Treasury a veto over the size and terms of bonus payments.

It is thought RBS will now have to agree the size of this year’s payouts with UK Financial Investments (UKFI), which manages the public stakes in banks.

RBS, which will be 84 per cent state-owned under the terms of the Asset Protection Scheme (APS), has already agreed to limit cash bonuses to those paid under A[pounds sterling]39,000 a year, with higher earners paid in shares over three years.

The bank has already put aside A[pounds sterling]1.79bn in the first half of this year to cover staff expenses, including salaries and bonuses.

The recent rebound in stock markets has led to bumper investment banking hauls so far this year and the sector is estimated to be preparing to fork out a 50 per cent hike in annual windfalls to A[pounds sterling]6bn.

RBS’s global banking and markets division, which employs around 20,000 people, is looking set for a record year.

This division alone is thought to have set aside an estimated A[pounds sterling]1bn in staff payouts last year.

The bonus clampdown provides a challenge for RBS, as remuneration is key in the banking sector to attracting and retaining top staff.

Stephen Hester, chief executive of RBS, has referred to payment restrictions as “additional obstacles that makes our job of recovering money for the taxpayer more difficult”, but said he understood why it was being done.

Suggestions that the Government would step in to limit this year’s bonuses met with concern from shareholders.

It is reported that investors, backed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), were worried that RBS would lose staff and find it difficult to attract new applicants.

One said that the move was “wholly political”.

Peter Montagnon, ABI director of investment affairs, said he wanted RBS to negotiate reasonable settlements for employees who had performed well.

“It would not be acceptable to yield to the short-term wishes of one shareholder if this means sacrificing value for all,” he said.

RBS is understood to have agreed the deal only to repair its balance sheet.

The firm said that the requirement “may adversely impact” on its ability to retain key staff, depending on the result of negotiations with UKFI.

GQ Says New Paddle Will ‘Revolutionize Ping Pong’

PR Newswire, Dec 1, 2009

NEW YORK, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ — GQ Magazine has added the BrodmannBlades(TM) to its list of “Best Stuff 2009″. GQ described the patent-pending double-bladed paddle as “badass,” proclaiming it a “weird-looking paddle that will revolutionize ping pong.”

BrodmannBlades(TM), the first major innovation in the game of table tennis in over a hundred years, eliminates the handle from the table tennis paddle. The unique new product consists of two blades, or hitting surfaces, that are worn like a glove on either hand.

“It’s a natural extension of the player’s hand,” says Alfred Brodmann, the product designer. “Players make forehand and backhand shots by using the front and back of their hands.” Brodmann added he feels “honored to be included on GQ’s annual list.”

Sean O’Neill, two-time table tennis Olympian and five-time National champion reviewed the product for GQ. It is on newsstands now and will be posted to the Cars Gear section of GQ.com (http://www.gq.com/cars-gear) over the next few days.

Last week, BrodmannBlades(TM) announced their first retail distribution agreement with Paragon Sports. Photos and video are available at: http://inr.mediaseed.tv/Brodmann_37184

Duo team up for double glory at Folkestone

Duo team up for double glory at Folkestone

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Dec 1, 2009

TRAINER Warren Greatrex and jockey Paddy Brennan enjoyed a profitable afternoon at Folkestone yesterday as they teamed up for success with Den Of Iniquity and Quartano.

Both horses were sent off at short prices for the Upper Lambourn handler, who is in his first season training at Weathercock House.

Den Of Iniquity (11-10 favourite) had promised much after winning two bumpers back in the 2006/7 season, but has had his problems and the Bet After The Off At ladbrokes.com Beginners’ Chase was just his seventh racecourse start.

He looked to be in trouble at one point as The Jazz Musician kicked for home but responded to Paddy Brennan’s urgings to take it up two out. Numide made a real battle of it but Den Of Iniquity dug deep on the run-in, eventually edging two lengths clear. Greatrex said: “Wherever he’s won, he’s won well and that was the first time he’s really been made to battle.

“The second horse is no slouch and he kept digging. He will improve a lot for that too.

“We think he can go on to better things now and Paddy did mention the Feltham on Boxing Day when he came back in, but we will see.”

Quartano completed the near 3-1 brace with a bloodless success in the EBF/Prix De Pharmacie Du Chateau ‘NH’ Novices’ Hurdle.

Lord Singer set out to steal the glory from the front but Brennan had his every move covered and kicked on before the last to stride six lengths clear without really being asked a question.

“He was very, very impressive but has been lacking in confidence
