Ministers Clement and Day Welcome U.S. Government Support Program for Auto Suppliers
Tue ,24/11/2009Market Wire, March, 2009
Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, and the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade, welcomed the creation of the Auto Supplier Support Program, announced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Similar to the U.S. Auto Supplier Support Program, Canada already has an Accounts Receivable Insurance (ARI) program, provided by Export Development Canada (EDC), which may be used by parts suppliers to the domestic auto industry.
“Through EDC, I am proud to say that we addressed this concern early and continue to be there for auto suppliers across the country,” said Minister Clement. “As the fortunes of the Canadian auto industry are linked to the recovery of the U.S. economy, we see today’s announcement as a positive step toward restoring confidence in the supplier base at a critical time for the industry.”
In 2008, EDC provided a total of $4.2 billion in commercial facilitation to 595 Canadian companies in the auto industry through its financing and insurance products and services

Stop Feeding Bad Habits For Happy Bunnies
Tue ,24/11/20090 Comments | Sunday Mail (Glasgow, Scotland), Nov 22, 2009
WITH poor quality diets leading to obesity and many other health problems in humans, its not surprising to find out that our pet rabbits suffer equally.
Despite being caring owners, we potentially shorten the natural lifespan of Britain’s 1.6million pet rabbits by as much as 50 per cent, as inappropriate diets lead bunnies to become overweight with overgrown teeth. In the wild, rabbits nibble away on grass for hours, consuming a large volume of fibre, which grinds down their continually growing teeth while keeping them regular.
Such natural diets are also crucial to keep our pet bunnies healthy, feeding them in a way as close as possible to their wild counterparts.

ENGLAND hitman Emile Heskey came to Aston Villa’s rescue with a face-saving equaliser.
The supersub made his mark just as it looked like Burnley boss Owen Coyle would celebrate his second anniversary with another home win.
And it was perhaps fitting that another substitute Stewart Downing should play his part.
With 20 minutes to go, Downing made his longawaited debut after his pounds 12million move from Middlesbrough in the summer, despite having a broken foot.
With time ticking away and Burnley hanging on to an early lead courtesy of Steve Caldwell’s first strike of the season, Villa looked increasingly desperate.
O’Neill played his ace by sending on Heskey with the sole task of grabbing a leveller.
It came with just four minutes to go as Downing curled in a troublesome corner, which Brian Jensen could only manage to punch out – as far as the feet of James Milner.
The former Newcastle man put the ball back in the goalmouth mix and Heskey powered home the close-range equaliser.
O’Neill admitted: “Emile was very important for us. His reputation may be as a provider, but he took his chance well for us and gave us a point.
“We were stodgy in the first half, which is a surprise after our last outing against Bolton. In the end, we had enough forwards on the pitch and Emile came up trumps.
“It was a big plus for Downing too. He’s a distance away from real match fitness.
“But he got a little spurt out there and can only improve, although it will be after Christmas before we see the best of him.”
It was tough on Burnley, who had dominated the match for long spells before Villa finally realised the game was slipping away and acted decisively.
Coyle admitted: “We were well placed to get all three points, but you can’t ask for more from your players. They worked their socks off.
“It might turn out to be an important point too

Factery Labs Develops FactRank Technology
Mon ,23/11/20090 Comments | Wireless News, Nov 20, 2009
Factery Labs, a search technology company, announced the launch of its FactRank technology, a new way for people to find information on the web.
Currently if one enters a query into a search engine, the response is a list of blue links. According to Factery Labs, FactRank goes beyond delivering links: for each search query the FactEngine extracts facts from recommended pages and builds a FactIndex ranked by authority.
“Old fashioned search engines don’t work well in the real-time web. Communities are taking over the job of recommending URLs,” said Paul Pedersen, founder and president of Factery Labs. “What’s missing is a way to cut through the noise of community recommendation: Which users should be trusted, which pages contain the best facts, and what are those facts?”
Using an old-fashioned search engine, a user who searches for information on Barack Obama will get a list of links to various web pages

12,000 died in our hospitals last year..and the HSE doesn't know if
Sun ,22/11/20090 Comments | Daily Mirror, The; London (UK), Nov 21, 2009 | by NIALL HUNTER
NEARLY 12,000 patients died in Irish hospitals last year, new figures showed yesterday.
However, the HSE has admitted that it does not have access to any statistics which would show whether the number of deaths occurring in any particular hospital are above or below the norm.
This data is normally thought to be of major importance in maintaining patient safety in a country’s health service, but it does not appear to exist in any form in Ireland.
This means that patients currently have no way of comparing potential risks of treatment in different hospitals.
The independent health safety body, the Health Information and Quality Authority, said this type of information should be readily available to the HSE – and for the public to view.
Information obtained under Freedom of Information shows that 11,697 people died in Irish acute hospitals in 2008, compared to 11,967 in 2007. This compares to more than 9,400 patient deaths in hospitals recorded in 2002, the last year for which mortality figures were previously released to irishhealth.com Since then, hospitals would have recorded a considerable increase in activity levels. There were 892,634 discharges from acute hospitals in 2002 compared to 1,317,626 in 2007.
However, the total mortality numbers do not show the whole picture.
The HSE does not have current “hospital standardised mortality rates”. These figures would show how much one hospital’s death rates differ from the norm after adjustments are made to reflect the risk and complexity of a hospital’s caseload

Obama in China
Sun ,22/11/20090 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 21, 2009 | by Deseret News
In the 37 years since Richard Nixon made his groundbreaking trip, many presidents have visited China. Because of U.S. economic troubles, however, the one just concluded by President Barack Obama seemed to have a different feel.
China’s willingness to lend is a major factor in the Obama administration’s plan for U.S. recovery. In addition, the United States has a lopsided trade imbalance with China, and American consumers have come to count on inexpensive Chinese products. That’s hardly the backdrop for tough talk on human rights or for an American president to prod the Chinese to defuse a dangerous Iran.
The United States, it seems, no longer holds the upper hand in the relationship. In truth, neither nation holds that advantage. China is the world’s largest holder of U.S. Treasuries, but that also means its economic fortunes are intertwined with our own.
Still, that does not mean the president should show signs of weakness. We were troubled by Obama’s agreement to a joint news conference with President Hu Jintao where no questions were allowed. His decision not to meet with the Dalai Lama during the trip, unlike what his most recent predecessors had done, also signaled a willingness to forgo important matters in deference to the feelings of his hosts. The one area in which progress was made, global warming, was arguably the least important matter for the two nations.
To be fair, it is difficult to judge how successful Obama’s trip was. The most important meeting between the two leaders took place for 2 1/2 hours in private. Some sources said Obama was blunt and tough when discussing human-rights issues during this meeting. In any event, the meeting most likely served the same purpose as similar encounters between new presidents and world leaders — it established the basis for a relationship that could be important when crises arise.
Clearly, the best approach to China involves a spirit of cooperation and friendship. That was always the case in the past, as well. It is why the President George H.W

Mammograms
An expert panel’s recommendation that mammography screening to detect breast cancer be scaled back has caused consternation among women and doctors and prompted some attempts to connect the results to the debate over health care.
It is important to keep the findings and recommendations in perspective. They are guidance for women and doctors. The decision about whether to be screened is properly left to each woman – to determine with the help of her doctor what risks and benefits she is most comfortable accepting.
The new recommendation came from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a government-appointed group of 16 outside experts created 25 years ago to advise the Department of Health and Human Services on the effectiveness of various screening techniques

RT Brokerage Services Calls for an End to Mortgage Underwriters' "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy
Sun ,22/11/2009Market Wire, November, 2009
Advertising buyer commission rebates is central
to the discount real estate brokerage’s message, but properly accounting
for them falls into a gray area. Most conventional mortgage lenders say
they absolutely prohibit any kind of payment paid outside of closing,
including real estate commission rebates. “Then how are these advertised
rebate checks possible?” asks Louis Herrera, CEO of RT Brokerage Services.
“It took careful investigating, but we found the loophole,” states Mr.
Herrera. “Most underwriting happens far away from where a loan is
initially submitted, so most underwriters have no idea whether brokerage A
or brokerage B is a discount brokerage. Since the underwriters do not have
a disclosure policy for buyer real estate commission rebates, they have no
way of knowing whether a commission rebate is part of the transaction, and
the borrower or brokerage has no obligation to disclose such a rebate.”
Mortgage regulators have worked hard to make the home-lending process
transparent. Yet the final HUD-1 Settlement Statements for some discount
brokerages do not show a buyer rebate — especially in cases where the
commission rebate exceeds the buyer’s closing costs. “This has to change.
Everything needs to be disclosed and clearly accounted for on the certified
HUD-1 statement, regardless of the commission rebates amounts,” says CEO
Herrera. “Certainly, if I were a shareholder in any one of these lending
institutions, I would want to know that the underwriters have presented a
complete and accurate picture of any ‘compensating factors’ that might
improve the borrower’s ability to carry the loan.”
“If underwriters can’t find a way to include commission rebates that are in
excess of a buyer’s closing costs in their analysis, then they will have to
develop a disclosure policy so that everyone offering commission rebates
plays by the same rules,” remarks Louis Herrera. “This week we sent a
letter to the top 15 loan originators in the marketplace requesting their
official policy on buyer real estate commission rebates, whether or not
rebate checks can be paid outside of closing, and if they had any
disclosure requirements. As we receive responses to our requests, we will
post them on our website at www.rtbrokerage.com/rebates .”
